ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) —  

Beginning in January 2023, the Department of the Air Force will transition civilian employee display names on email and other online applications from their pay plan to the default ‘CIV’.

This shift will align the department with sister services and other government organizations, while also focusing on employees’ unique expertise rather than their pay plan.

“Our civilian employees provide diverse corporate knowledge and are the continuity of our organizations,” said Alex Wagner, assistant secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. “This change enables civilians to be identified by the scope of their portfolios and job responsibilities rather than solely by their authorized pay plan.”

Currently, there are more than 250,000 civilian accounts, including GS and NH pay grades. The Air Force Identification System will transition display names, with the exception of special agent, senior executive service, and highly qualified expert, in batches of 10,000 over a course of 18 hours to minimize disruptions.

Once this transition takes effect, members can reverse the change and maintain display of their pay grade and update other display name options, by visiting the CAC-enabled AFID self-help portal.
