According to the regional military administrations, the number of damaged facilities exceeded 215,000 as of February 2024. These figures were provided by the Ukrainian regional military administrations at the request of LIGA.net for a story about the destruction and reconstruction over the two years of war.
The eastern and southern regions of Ukraine suffered the most, where the fiercest fighting took place. In Donetsk and Kharkiv regions, more than 44,000 objects have been destroyed in each. They are followed by Kyiv, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions.
“The destruction and damage of more than 200,000 objects during the war is unacceptable and must be stopped immediately,” said Pavlo Kostyuk, founder of the Ukraine Reconstruction Fund.
Private and apartment buildings have suffered the most from Russian shelling. Since February 24, 2022, the aggressor’s troops have destroyed or damaged more than 143,000 private and 23,000 apartment buildings, which is more than 75% of all objects.
The occupiers are also systematically destroying social infrastructure, especially educational institutions, hospitals, factories, and housing and communal facilities. This destruction not only causes material damage, but also creates a humanitarian crisis, leaving thousands of people homeless and without access to basic services.
According to the World Bank, as of February 2024, Ukraine already needs almost $500 billion for reconstruction.
“These are incredible figures that emphasize the scale of the tragedy and the need for international support in the recovery process. We must focus all our efforts on rebuilding our country using the most modern technologies and practices. The role of our foundation in this process is extremely important, as we are working to ensure that every affected family receives the necessary help and support,” emphasized Pavlo Kostyuk.
Restoration of Ukraine is not only about rebuilding destroyed buildings, but also about creating conditions for a decent life and development of every Ukrainian.
“We must ensure safety, comfort and quality of life for all our citizens. Together, we will definitely achieve this goal,” said Pavlo Kostyuk.
